Let's talk about feelings of overwhelm, shall we?
Do you know when you've had too much or done too much? Are you aware when your body is overstimulated and needs to rest? For most of us we are so use to going and doing and being something to somebody that we have no idea when the mind needs a break so we just keep pushing on until the body gives out and is overcome with some sort of physical or emotional pain. Why are we living like this? The other day my daughter said, "Mom, my brain hurts." I thought she was referring to a headache and so I asked her to tell me about it. She went on to say that her brain was driving her crazy because it wouldn't leave her alone. Then she brought up the snow globe analogy telling me that her brain felt like it was full of glitter. She was overstimulated and she knew it. I was too, but as a mother to a small child the responsibilities are inexhaustible. I'm wired to keep going and doing until it's time for bed and even then there's more work to be done so I get up in the morning and start all over again. My daughter reminded me of the importance of taking time to stop and relax and be quiet when the mind becomes overwhelmed. We turned on some peaceful music and took some long slow deep breaths and the energy shifted almost immediately. It's okay to stop, to sit on the couch and take a break. It's okay to sit in a nice hot epsom salt bath and soak away the tension. It's okay to take a nap in the middle of the day. It's okay to take time to do nothing. The body is wise and intelligent and a living breathing organism that needs rest to function optimally. Do you want to just exist and survive or do you want to thrive? Don't wait until the body falls ill or shuts down or you strain a muscle before you start paying attention. Be present. Listen. Take good care. And for the love of all things holy, GET ON THE MAT!!
