📷: Daria Nepriakhina on Unsplash Each week I put a lot of thought into what to say because I want my words to be meaningful and to come from the heart. This week my focus is on social media and the need to keep up. I remember feeling very insecure as a child because we didn't have much and there was an overwhelming need to fit in and to be accepted, but back then my worth was tied to what I was wearing, the house I lived in and the "stuff" my family owned. I always felt that if I could just have a pair of designer jeans or a trendy hair style or fancy shoes that everyone would think I was cool. It was exhausting trying to keep up with the Joneses and to fit in during a time of social awkwardness (adolescence). I thought growing up and becoming comfortable in my own skin would somehow change the course of never feeling good enough, but now with social media weaving itself through our every day lives it has become harder and harder to sustain a sense of perceived value. It's essential for business owners to have an online presence, yet it can be the source of anxiety for so many. Social influencers who have thousands of followers are killing it and you think, "wow, how do they do it" and then you spend hours trying to compete with their style in an attempt to engage more with your own audience, which is very daunting and overwhelming because it's not you. What I’ve learned is that you can’t be like everyone else and you can’t spend hours scrolling through the posts of those who are wildly popular at the same profession as you because it will destroy your sense of worth. You can’t be everything to everyone, but you can be you; your authentic beautiful you. Find your own creative approach that's meaningful to your audience because they want to see YOU and to know that you see them. As both a realtor and a yoga teacher I engage with people in a very deep and meaningful way. I cannot script my audience or bullshit them because they know. I’ve taken professional development courses and learned all the "right" things to say and I know they are effective, but not with my people. I developed a more personal brand that is authentic and genuine and I have to stay the course because the moment I veer and try to be like someone else on social media with thousands of followers my energy shifts and I’m no longer identified with my truth and people feel that. In fact, funny story. I was taking a course where I had to call 100 people a day (literally) to practice sales scripts. Some days we called complete strangers, but on this particular day I called someone in my own sphere. Even though I confidentially conveyed the message just the way I was taught, my person said, “ummm … this doesn’t even sound like you.” And she was right. It wasn’t me and she felt it. It was then that I knew I needed to stick to my own authentic approach that was true for me. I say all this because it has come up a lot recently in conversations with business owners ranging from stylists, authors, yoga teachers, realtors, etc. The common thread is that everyone is feeling the same weight and pressure to perform. If you are struggling and wondering if you’re doing all the right things I cannot encourage you enough to step away from the applications for a moment and think about what product or service you provide and what people really want from you and then go do that. Be you. Be real. Be sincere. Listen. Look your people in the eye. Feel into what "they" need and show up for them. Be genuine and don’t try too hard. Be gentle with yourself. Breathe. Take time to disconnect. Be present. And just remember; love does matter. It matters a lot. Social media is essential, but you can approach it in a way that feels natural and aligned with your personality and at that end of the day that’s what you’re really selling; yourself. If you want to see ME, come join me on the mat. It doesn’t get more real than that. Love & Light, BeAnne 🖤🖤🖤 Zoom Live Stream: Saturday March 6th, 9:30am-10:45am EDT.
