![]() I hope you had a great week. Mine was pretty amazing. It’s quite spectacular what a little time at the beach can do for a girl's state of mind. For years I thought yoga was for people who just wanted to stretch and that wasn't me. My mind was conditioned to perform, to work harder, and to sweat. Who needed to stretch? I had calories to burn. I pushed and pushed until something broke and it always came at a cost. We as humans are designed to survive, but as we have moved into the modern world our survival mechanisms aren’t saving us from wild tigers or bears, but from all the devices and environmental stimulants. We are in survivor mode (all.the.time) and our bodies weren’t meant to endure this kind of stress. While all this pushing may very well make us stronger and more resilient, it stresses the nervous systems to the point of exhaustion and then we explode. We snap at our children, talk down to our partners, speak rudely to strangers or get injured or sick. Why are we living in this reactive stressful state? It’s way easier to manage the stress than to behave irrationally or to come unhinged. A dear friend of mine recently listened to a podcast where a young Iditarod musher was being interviewed. She was talking about the importance of caring for her dogs during the race and said that she gave her dogs snacks, water, and rest BEFORE they needed them because it was easier to prevent fatigue than to recover from it. What if we took better care of ourselves and took the time to rest? We could prevent fatigue and overwhelm and be much more at peace. Instead, we push and do and go until we break and then, and only then, do we stop. One of the good things that came out of the pandemic was that it forced everyone to stop and it’s not that our work stopped, but we were given a chance to suspend travel for awhile and not be in the car so much. We weren't out running unnecessary errands or going out to eat or being out in the world with no awareness. Now that we’re moving back towards a new normal, what mechanisms are you putting in to place to prevent exhaustion? Take the time my friends or the body will take it for you and it won’t be nearly as pleasant. We’ve all been there. Love & Light, BeAnne 🖤🖤🖤 Zoom Live Stream: Sunday April 18th, 10am-11:15am EDT.
